Kiddush meaning sanctification, is the prayer recited over a cup of wine in the home and synagogue. The kiddush is recited on the eve of the Sabbath or festival before the start of the meal, since one should not eat on these occasions before the Kiddush has been recited.

Kiddush cups have always had elaborate designs, with many a kiddush cup having one's family emblem, Jerusalem, Shabbat prayers, or one's name and date engraved on the Kiddush Cup.
